Muscle is a metabolic organ. It burns energy at rest, regulates glucose disposal, and serves as the body's largest reservoir of amino acids during illness or stress. When muscle mass declines, so does resting metabolic rate, which is one reason age-related fat gain and muscle loss often travel together. Preserving muscle, therefore, is a metabolic strategy as much as a strength strategy.1
There is also a compelling safety case.
